Families with missing loved ones never fully stop their search, thus is the case of missing Paula Jean Welden.
Paula went missing on December 1, 1946 from Bennington Vermont, few of us were even born then. She was 18 years old, 5’5, 122 lbs, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Distinguishing characteristics include a grayish scar on her left knee, a small scar under her left eyebrow and a vaccination scar on her right thigh. She has a cleft chin and an upturned nose.
Paula was last seen wearing a red parka with a fur-trimmed hood, blue jeans and white sneakers. She wore a small gold wristwatch with a narrow black band.
Paula was a sophomore at Bennington College, studying art. She lived with her parents in Connecticut when school wasn’t in session.
On the day Paula went missing, she worked two shifts at the dining hall and came back to her room. She spoke to her roommate for a while, then decided to go for a walk on the Long Trail near the Glastenbury Mountain. She was underdressed for the cold Vermont winter.
When Paula went missing, there was no state police force in Vermont and the local police were unable to handle a missing person, let alone a missing person who was assumed to have met her demise through foul play.
In 1949, police arrested a man for robbery and assault, that man had newspaper clippings about Paula in his pockets. Police tried to link him to Paula’s disappearance but were unable to.
Paula enjoyed the outdoors, she skated and went for bike rides, she enjoyed hiking and camping and. Her art activities included watercolors, pencil and charcoal sketching. She also enjoyed swimming, square-dancing and guitar playing in 1946. She has work experience as a waitress.
It’s doubtful that anyone reading this blog was old enough to have any knowledge of what happened to Paula, but perhaps your parents or an aunt lived in the Bennington Vermont area and might know someone. No one should go missing for 61 years, Paula’s family deserve an answer to their questions.
